What is a modular kitchen?

A modular kitchen is a kitchen system that works according to the modular principle. This means that the kitchen is put together from independent functional blocks - entirely according to your needs. The oven, hob extractor system, sink, wall units and kitchen units are combined as individual components. The modules are positioned to match the floor plan of the kitchen and can be free-standing or wall-mounted. The difference to the fixed kitchen unit is that the modular kitchen can be completely customised, enlarged or reduced in size with new elements, as the individual elements are not connected to each other.

    Advantages of a modular kitchen

A modular kitchen impresses with its adaptability and flexibility. It can be customised and simply grows with your own wishes. The most important advantages at a glance:

    • Flexibility: Modules can be freely combined and expanded

    • Mobility: Individual kitchen blocks are easy to transport and ideal for rented flats or frequent relocations

    • Individuality: From the modular kitchen in solid wood to the purist modern style - materials, colours and worktops are freely selectable

    • Easy assembly: The individual parts are usually easy to assemble and position.

Planning: Step by step to a customised modular kitchen

Before you can enjoy your new modular kitchen, you need to plan it. Take into account the floor plan and the room's positioning options for the modular system. This allows you to customise the kitchen exactly to your living situation - from a space-saving solution to an open-plan kitchen. The following steps will help you with structured planning:

      • Measure the room: Note the exact dimensions of wall lengths, recesses, window heights and connections

      • Check connections: Locate water, power and exhaust air connections and have them adjusted as required

      • Define zones: Kitchen can be divided into the five classic areas: Stocking, rinsing, preparing, cooking, storing

      • Take movement areas into account: Allow sufficient space for walkways and open pull-outs, especially for free-standing modular kitchens or if an island is integrated

      • Planning for light: Targeted lighting of work areas

      • Designing storage space: Plan cabinets, pull-outs, shelves and interior organisation specifically, even in a compact kitchen

      Combination options in modular kitchens

The fridge on the left, the larder unit in the corner and the oven and hob extractor system in the centre, or something completely different? The modular design of the modular kitchen allows plenty of freedom in the composition of the individual elements.

Attention: keep an eye on your kitchen processes. The worktop, cupboards, refrigerator and hob should be arranged in such a way that you have short distances when preparing your food and processes are not disrupted. In large rooms, it is worth integrating an island to combine the cooking and seating areas. Find out how to create the perfect island kitchen.

Style variants of the modular kitchen

Modular kitchens are available in many designs - from functional and affordable to high-quality and customised. Depending on the choice of material and front design, a very individual expression is created that can be harmoniously integrated into the living space. The following style variants show how different modular kitchens can be:

        • Modular kitchen in country house style:
This style is characterised by warm colours, coffered fronts and natural materials. Elements such as open shelves or ceramic handles create the typical look.

        • Modern modular kitchen:
Straight lines, handleless and reduced to clear structures - typical of modern kitchen solutions. Matt or high-gloss fronts and integrated lighting elements emphasise the purist character.

        • Modular kitchen in solid wood:
The material takes centre stage here: Wood types such as oak, walnut or ash give the kitchen a natural look. Combined with metal handles, the result is a timeless design with character.

Open space meets function: BORA Classic 2.0 Plan your cooking centre with an integrated extractor and clear lines.

Perfect for free-standing islands and compact rows.

          Longevity and care

Quality pays off: Sturdy carcasses, resilient pull-outs and resistant surfaces increase the service life. Solid wood can be sanded and re-oiled. Stainless steel remains spotless with a microfibre cloth and water. Interchangeable fronts and worktops keep the design up-to-date for a long time.

            FAQs on the modular kitchen

A modular kitchen consists of functional units for cooking, washing up, preparing food and storage. The individual kitchen units can be used independently and can be combined freely within the room.

Yes. BORA cooktop extractor systems, the BORA X BO and BORA refrigerators can be installed to fit perfectly. This creates a calm, closed front with high functionality and clear lines.
