The term rustic comes from the Latin word "rusticus", which means "rural". Many rustic kitchens incorporate elements of the country house style - but the style can also be interpreted in very different ways: Sometimes Mediterranean elements dominate, sometimes the design is reminiscent of a cosy alpine hut. Modern interpretations with clear lines and natural materials are also possible. What characterises the rustic kitchen style and how do you integrate it into your home?

What is a rustic kitchen?

A large burl wood dining table forms the centrepiece and harmonises wonderfully with real wood kitchen fronts. On the walls, natural stone tiles, handmade ceramic tiles or mosaic tiles in warm colours create a cosy atmosphere, while cast-iron pots and copper pans hang above the hob, ready to hand: Welcome to the rustic kitchen.

  • Decorative accessories such as flowered curtains, twisted candlesticks or colourfully decorated herb pots are typical of a rustic style.

  • Rough brick walls, metal accents and matt fronts also create a rustic look.

  • Light, warm colours, coffered doors and carved details as well as accessories made of ceramic, jute and wickerwork characterise the country house style - the classic among rustic kitchen designs.

    Typical materials

Naturalness is the trump card: Natural materials are traditionally used in rustic kitchens.

    • Real wood radiates warmth and also offers functional benefits: It has a positive effect on the indoor climate and is durable thanks to its high level of robustness.

    • Ceramics add a nostalgic touch - for example in the form of crockery and accessories.

    • Terracotta tiles on the floor or on the wall provide a Mediterranean twist and are reminiscent of French country kitchens.

    • Furniture handles, decorations and cast iron cookware complete the rustic ambience.

Tip: Go for a rustic look with the home textiles in the kitchen too. Coarse textures such as linen, jute and sisal go perfectly with materials such as wood and natural stone.

Inspiration for choosing the type of wood

Light-coloured woods with a striking grain are very popular in the rustic country house style. These properties are offered by light-coloured oak, pine and birch, for example:

    • Oak wood is hard-wearing and durable - an ideal choice for high-quality kitchen fronts.

    • Pine is widely used in rustic kitchens due to its clear structures with knotholes. The yellowish to honey-coloured tint creates a cosy ambience.

    • With its fine grain, birch creates elegant looks with a rustic touch. The light yellow to cream colour radiates friendliness and warmth.

Dark wood stands for elegance and cosiness. This makes it an excellent choice for rustic kitchens with playful decorative elements and for designs with an industrial touch. Varieties with a clear structure are particularly suitable:

    • Smoked oak delights with its intense colouring, the grain typical of oak remains visible.

    • Walnut impresses with its gently flowing surface design - perfect for rustic kitchens with modern fittings.

    • Wenge with its dark brown, almost black colour and distinct texture is an ideal candidate for a rustic kitchen design with a dramatic touch.

Good to know: When selecting wooden fronts, a distinction is made between solid wood, solid wood and real wood. Solid wood is obtained from whole logs, while solid wood is always made from one type of wood, which can consist of different pieces of wood. The term real wood refers to genuine wood material - this includes both solid wood and wood veneers.

      Ideas for choosing the worktop

Wooden fronts form the basis - and a rustic worktop for the kitchen completes the style. It should be resistant, durable and easy to clean. Which materials perfect the rustic interior design?

      • Natural stone such as granite and slate is heat-resistant, scratch-resistant and impresses with its unique structures and veins. Marble impresses above all with its elegant appearance, but is somewhat more sensitive to scratches and acids. Every natural stone is unique and can be customised. Tip: A striking broken edge perfects the rustic look.

      • Concrete adds an industrial touch to the wooden fronts and looks sophisticated and urban. For use as a worktop, concrete is usually sealed to protect it from stains and moisture.

      • When wood meets wood, you create a country house look to fall in love with. For example, pair light-coloured woods with white glazed cassette fronts to create a friendly, cosy ambience. For strong contrasts, combine a dark wooden worktop with a rustic kitchen in white.

Tip: Whether wood, concrete or stone: Integrate the sink and cooktop extractor system - such as the BORA Professional 3.0 - flush with the worktop for a seamless, luxurious look. The sink can also be milled into natural stone slabs. Matching, movable cutting boards extend the working area in a flexible way.

The BORA Professional 3.0 absorbs odours and steam at the point of origin - and it can be modularly designed.

Accessories and lighting for rustic looks

Whether you opt for the elegant version made of dark wood and a marble worktop or for a rustic interior design like in a country house - adornment elements and a well thought-out lighting concept give the ensemble the perfect finishing touch:

      • Brass or copper luminaires serve as general lighting or specifically illuminate the work area. Favour warm light. It creates a cosy atmosphere and emphasises the rustic design.

      • Install industrial-look lamps above a kitchen island to skilfully set the scene.

      • A cast-iron chandelier is a light source and decoration with a wow effect in one.

      • Copper and cast iron cookware can also be used as decoration - for example on hooks above the kitchen island.

      • Kitchen herbs in ceramic or enamel plant pots create a cosy atmosphere and emphasise the natural effect of wooden surfaces.

Tip: A touch of vintage is particularly good for rustic wooden kitchens - for example in the form of nostalgic metal signs, antique scales or coffee grinders, wooden boxes or retro ceramic containers for storing kitchen utensils.
