Solid wood kitchens are made entirely from real wood and impress with their naturalness, quality and durability. The style combines traditional craftsmanship with modern kitchen technology and creates rooms that radiate warmth and durability.

What is solid wood and what characterises a solid wood kitchen?

A solid wood kitchen is made entirely from solid wood - without substrate materials, veneers or composites. The material is made from a single log or from continuous solid wood planks.

Features of a solid wood kitchen:

All load-bearing and visible parts are made of solid wood

      Natural grain and colour gradients

High dead weight and maximum stability

      Craftsmanship and long service life

The result is a kitchen that impresses with its natural look and sustainable production. Every solid wood kitchen is unique - characterised by the individual structure of the wood.

Real wood kitchens and solid wood kitchens - what's the difference?

Both terms sound similar, but differ significantly in structure and material depth.

    Kitchen typeMaterial structureProperties
Solid wood kitchenComposed entirely of a single piece of wood or continuous solid wood parts. Very stable, durable and natural, but high-maintenance.
Solid wood kitchenAll load-bearing parts are made of solid wood of the same type; the back wall or drawer bottoms may be made of a different material. Slightly lighter, robust and easier to clean than solid wood.
Real wood kitchen Exposed surfaces are made of real wood, usually veneer on a substrate or solid wood. Authentic look, but not made entirely of wood. A generic term for solid wood and veneer kitchens.

A solid wood kitchen is the most natural and highest quality option, while solid or real wood kitchens offer similar visual results with less maintenance. Our kitchen planning tips will help you to realise the kitchen according to your wishes.

Advantages of a solid wood kitchen

A kitchen made of solid wood has a number of convincing advantages - functional, ecological and aesthetic.

      Advantages at a glance:

      • Durable: can be used for decades, virtually indestructible with the right care

      • sustainable: Natural wood as a renewable raw material with a positive eco-balance

      • natural: regulates room humidity and ensures a healthy indoor climate

      • repairable: Scratches or signs of wear can simply be sanded off

      • lasting value: ages gracefully and gains character over the years

The natural material gives the kitchen a pleasant feel and creates an atmosphere that radiates a sense of security.

Suitable types of wood for solid wood kitchens

The choice of wood type influences the appearance, durability and maintenance requirements of the kitchen. Particularly hard-wearing hardwoods that tolerate moisture and temperature fluctuations well are suitable for kitchens.

        Wood typePropertiesOptics
Oakrobust, durable, rustic strong grain, warm brown
Beechhard, tough, stable even structure, light
        Maplefine-pored, easy-care light and modern
Walnutnoble, dimensionally stable dark tone, luxurious
Ashhard, lively grain modern, light beige to brown

Tip: Combinations of light-coloured wood and dark accents create depth and a modern touch in the kitchen.

        Care and surface treatment

A solid wood kitchen requires regular maintenance to preserve its natural appearance. It all depends on the right surface treatment.

        Usual treatments:

        • Oiled: emphasises the grain, allows the wood to breathe, must be re-oiled regularly

        • waxed: gives a silky sheen, has a water-repellent effect

        • lacquered: easy to care for, but less natural to the touch

        Care tips:

        • Wipe off moisture immediately

        • do not use abrasive cleaning agents

        • re-oil or wax every six to twelve months

        • avoid exposure to high temperatures

An oiled or waxed surface can be easily refreshed. Scratches can be repaired selectively - a major advantage over veneered kitchens.

How do I care for a solid wood kitchen properly?

With the right treatment, wooden fronts and worktops stay beautiful for a long time.

          Regular care means:

          • Remove dust and dirt with a soft, slightly damp cloth.

          • Treat worktops with wood oil after cleaning.

          • Apply wax to maintain shine and protection.

          • For stubborn stains, sand lightly and re-oil.

          Remove grease stains:

          1. Remove fresh stains with kitchen paper.
          2. Apply a paste of baking soda and water.
          3. Allow to act briefly and wipe off with a damp cloth.
          4. Then re-oil the area.

This keeps the natural surface resistant and hygienically clean for a long time.
